The first time I read about the 52-week saving challenge on Rookie’s blog, I was amazed at how simple saving could be and how a little really does go a long way. I am someone who really struggles with saving- wants always seem to pop up right when I have money in hand. There is really nothing you can do when your money is staring at you with an expression that says ‘Utado?’
So Rookie’s 52-week challenge works this way; start by saving 50shs on week 1 then proceed by increasing 50shs to the amount from last week. So that means week 2’s amount is 100shs, 150shs for week 3, 200shs for week 4 and so on. On the last week of the year, (week 52), you will deposit 2,600shs and your total savings will be 68,900shs. How about that?

It means you can finally take yourself on that shopping spree, go on a road trip crisscrossing East Africa, purchase a return ticket to Dubai, prepare for your child’s school year, etc.
Why I am Taking Rookie’s 52-Week Savings Challenge
1.It’s a challenge to work harder
With this challenge you have to learn to be accountable to yourself which can be even harder than saving. The challenge motivates me to work harder so I can attain this financial goal I have set for myself. If I thought I could do it, then I probably can.
2.There’s no pressure
Some started the challenge with 100/- instead of 50/- and others 20/- instead of 50/-. The objective of the challenge is to instill in you the saving spirit and not make you feel overwhelmed. Some prefer to start the challenge backwards- saving the large amounts first and then finishing with the little ones.
3.Helps me prioritize
I have become more conscious of my spending thanks to the 52-week challenge by Rookie. I am learning a lot about my spending patterns and I’m better able to answer the question ‘Do I need it now?’
4.Rain rain go away
Kish just wants to feel a little more independent and confident that she can face rainy days.
Will you take on Rookie’s 52-week savings challenge? I am currently on week 3 saving 150bob. I’m really proud of myself and can’t wait to see how far I’ll get with this. If you think you’ll be joining me, leave a comment below so I know I’m not doing this alone. There lies strength in numbers, so they say.
