What should you look for in a DIY scrub? It’s got to be easy to make; you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen because you’re not cooking up juju. It’s got to be functional. This is a quest for a fresh new glow; its either people confuse you with a celestial being or no dice. Lastly, it’s got to be au naturel. The whole point of it being a DIY scrub is to eliminate chemicals you can’t even pronounce.

How To Make A Cucumber Scrub

This cucumber body scrub has all these qualities and more. It’s a refreshing scrub without any artificial ingredients or overpowering scent. My DIY cucumber scrub felt light and smooth, but cool and energizing as well. Want your skin to sing Kumbayah? Follow the directions below.

-¾ cup of sugar (If you need an intense exfoliant, use more. However, intense exfoliants should NEVER be used on a daily basis as they can cause damage to your skin)

-2 to 3 tbsp of coconut oil (extra virgin is preferred)

-1 cucumber, chopped or sliced

-1 tsp of rosemary leaves (optional)

-You’re going to need a blender

Preparing A DIY Cucumber Scrub

Wash your cucumber, slice/chop or toss two halves into your blender. Pour the sugar into the blender and then add your tablespoons of coconut oil. Puree until the cucumbers have broken down and you’re happy with the consistency. Once you are satisfied, pour into a jar that can be sealed.

Wash your face with warm water to open your pores and pat gently with a towel. Place a spoonful of the scrub on your fingers and begin applying the scrub on your face and neck. Use slow round motions as this increases blood circulation.

Relax for about 5 -10 minutes and then use a warm cloth to wipe off the scrub. Be gentle.

Wash your face with cold water to lock the pores, then pat your face dry with a towel. Don’t rub your skin. Instead, let that coconut oil absorb into your skin and give you all its rich benefits.

My Experience

After application, my skin looked clearer and felt softer. I literally wanted to stare at myself for the rest of the day. This immediate effect is largely thanks to the coconut oil and hydrating cucumber. After a few minutes of re-enacting Justin Timberlake’s Mirrors video, I felt a gentle breeze on my face- a sign that my skin was breathing easier.

To get the best out of this scrub, refrigerate it and use it daily (preferably before applying any makeup). It’s the perfect morning kick you need after a heavy dose of beauty sleep. It’s cool, refreshing and leaves you with a healthy glow!

Why coconut oil? Coconut oil moisturizes and hydrates skin. Coconut oil is to dry skin what an oasis is to the desert. It’s that gulp of water after a long period of thirst. Your skin will drink up all the nourishing fatty acids in coconut oil. This essential oil also has antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Vitamin A that slow down aging. It’s also rich in ferulic acid, an antioxidant which eliminates fine lines and spots.

Why cucumber? This vegetable whitens, hydrates and brightens skin. Cucumber soothes and calms sunburnt skin. It also gets rid of puffy eyes and dark circles. It’s an effective skin hydrant and coolant.

Why rosemary leaves? I love the smell of rosemary! Is it common for you to buy beauty products that smell good? Aroma is an essential part of a beauty routine. Different scents create different moods. Some scents calm, soothe and invigorate you. The smell of rosemary is one such example.
