It’s amazing how many household items double as beauty products. It’s also more amazing how they work just as well as expensive products that are usually filled with chemicals. Baking soda is great at ridding your skin of bacteria. It can treat bumps, pimples, and other skin irregularities. However, it doesn’t work on everyone. It may cause irritation for some people. If you encounter this, it would be best to eliminate it in your face masks.

This week my face has been talking to me. And there’s only one way skin can do that, in the best way it knows how- through acting up. I have a dry rash which I have a few assumptions about. Every time you notice you don’t have clear skin it means your skin needs something. Have you been meeting the 8 water glasses a day mark? Have you been eating clean? I’ve been filling my body with all sorts of fast food lately and the reward is not pleasing. Time to get to work.

DIY Baking Soda Coconut Oil Cleanser

For this homemade baking soda cleanser, you will need the following;

1tbsp baking soda

1tbsp coconut oil

If you have sensitive skin, use an extra tablespoon of coconut oil.

Preparation

Mix the two ingredients in a bowl and stir until the mixture is uniform. Wash your face with warm water to get rid of all the dirt and gunk. Use a piece of cotton wool to apply the mixture onto your face gently. Wait for 5 to 10 minutes then wash it off. It’s best not to leave baking soda on your face for too long. Remember, if you feel any irritation, wash your face immediately

My Experience

When I began applying this mixture on my face, I had intended for it to be a face mask. The baking soda was very harsh on my skin which wasn’t the case when I used my baking soda and lemon juice facemask a few months back. I washed my face immediately I started feeling a burning sensation. I was so worried that the “mask” hadn’t worked, but boy was I wrong.

My face felt lighter after using this baking soda and coconut oil cleanser. My skin looked cleaner and smoother. It felt more relaxed, like I had lifted it of a burden. The rash I was complaining about earlier looked milder. It has almost fully disappeared now!

DIY Baking Soda Coconut Oil Cleanser

I used Kentaste Coconut Oil because you know how much I am in love with this virgin coconut oil. You can get it at any major retailer. Got mine at Tuskyz. 400ml goes for 390/- & 250ml goes for 270/- There’s also a 700ml jar, but I can’t remember the price.

I used Clovers Baking Soda. You can get it at any supermarket and it goes for 20/- only. Just ask for baking soda or bicarbonate of soda.

I definitely wouldn’t recommend using this cleanser on a daily basis especially if you have problems with baking soda. Twice a week is enough.

Beauty Benefits of Ingredients Used

When there is a pH imbalance in the body, you will find that skin infections, breakouts, etc. increase. Baking soda is a base which helps correct the skin’s pH balance. That is the reason I decided to use it for my rash.

Coconut oil is antibacterial and it is also a great moisturizer. It will clog your pores and tighten them. Open pores are also a huge factor when it comes to skin breakouts. I love that I can moisturize my skin, soften it, heal it and tighten my pores all using this miracle oil.

DIY Baking Soda Coconut Oil Cleanser Tips

-Baking soda is very coarse so don’t go rubbing it on your skin during application.

-Use this cleanser as part of your beauty regimen in the same way you would use a normal store-bought cleanser.

-If you feel any irritation, it would be best if you don’t use this cleanser again

I was happy with the results that this cleanser produced for me. I’m still not sure if I will use it again but I’d love to hear your experience if you do use it. I use baking soda as a teeth and nail whitener. Let me know what your household uses for baking soda are in the comments below.
